St Peter’s Basilica…. Yes, for a guy who asked for salary, a basilica is good compensation, no? You remember that time that Peter told Jesus, “Lord … and us who left our families and followed you…how shall we be paid?” Smart fellow that one, seeing, as “the son of man did not have a place to lay his head…” Lesson from St Peter? Never follow anyone blindly. Ask questions. If you still do not get the drift, you must be cuckoo. Get your bible out and read!
Major basilica is a title that refers to the 4 high rank Roman Catholic churches which are St. Mary Major, St. Paul outside the Walls, St. Peter’s Basilica and archbasilica of St. John Lateran. Except for St. Peter’s Basilica which is in Vatican City, the other three are in Rome. Of the papal Basilicas present, St John Lateran is the oldest and is the papal throne seat. All the churches that you will come across with this title are basilicas only that they are minor Basilicas.
Pope Boniface VIII is the person behind the introduction of the Major Basilica and did it in 1300. The set conditions that for someone to be pardoned of all their sins fully, they had to fulfill some conditions included confessing their sins and making a pilgrimage to St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Basilicas which are the respective burial places of the apostles the basilicas are named after.
The 4 major basilicas are distinguished from other basilicas by having holy doors and being termed as the places that one has to visit to get the Roman Jubilee. The masses at the high altars in these Basilicas can only be celebrated by the Pope and his delegates. The basilicas have been ever open 24/7 until lately when things changed. This included a priest around the clock to listen to confessions.
There was a treaty in 1927 named the Lateran treaty that placed the 3 major basilicas out of Vatican on levels of foreign embassies. This mean that they enjoy high security watches with law enforcement officers patrolling the basilicas around the clock. Out of the Christian perspective, these basilicas are an indication of the great architecture that existed many of years ago. The Basilicas are huge and have managed the test of time and are still standing strong and being used in Catholic masses and events such as the selection of a new pope in St. Peter’s.

Can you Locate the basilica?
