To the moon and back has become a very common phrase nowadays, never mind that for most of us, it will never materialize. Man’s curiosity surpasses that of the cat! But just like a feline, the most difficult task is satisfying it. From time immemorial, he has been eager to know what the space holds. For instance, he wants to explore our planet earth sisters, to know what they have in store for him. For sure, he never gets enough and he is ready to do just anything humanly possible to achieve his goals. The most interesting fact is that he never gives up. The renowned astronauts who made a landing to the moon can ascertain this; they had to do several missions before their successful Apollo 11 mission.
Although many more visits have been paid to this heavenly body, it would not have been possible, if this crew did not usher them in. The journey to the moon started back in 1967 but it only materialized in 1969. Back then, there were many setbacks experienced by the experts with the rockets that were to carry them, to the space. With a number of simulations, the team finally made it. To be very specific, the crew set off on 16th of July in the year 1969 in a very sophisticated set of spacecrafts namely Colombia (CSM) and Eagle (LM). In it, there were three dedicated men: Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin A. Adrin Jr. and Michael Collins.
Four days later after the launch, Armstrong and Aldrin landed LM safely on a flat surface on the moon while Collins remained back in CSM. LM was able to stay for period of 21 hours and 36 minutes on the lunar body. The two astronauts even managed to stay outside the spacecraft for 2 hours and 31 minutes, making a stroll on the moon of about 50 meters from where they were landed. They also did not leave empty-handed in case some smart skeptic was to dispute the credibility of their mission. They collected some lunar rocks and soil. The mission that took eight days was completed and the two rockets landed safely in the Pacific Ocean.
