PROFESsee is my title. I am the perpetual learner, in pursuit of knowledge, wisdom and truth. I derived my name from professor
Space travel always gets me asking this question – what’s in it for me? But NASA keeps making big plans (don’t they always?) to explore the deeper ends of space by 2023. Perhaps they’ll one day come back with Megatron’s Spark or perhaps capture a “Decepticon”.  At the forefront of carrying out this manned space missions is the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV).
The name of the MPCV is derived from among the biggest night sky constellations. Its primary purpose at least from NASA’s point of view in the mid short-term is Mars – the Red Planet. As a top NASA official puts it, “Orion is a key piece of the flexible architecture that will enable humanity to set foot on the Red Planet, and we are committed to building the spacecraft and other elements necessary to make this a reality”
The Orion MPCV’s design is for four astronauts, and NASA has penned 20 years (and plenty billions of $$$ after) as the most feasible time to land on Mars. The Orion project took the baton from the space shuttle program retired in 2011. Orion MPCV has, in fact, undergone a test flight (Exploration Flight Test -1) in 2014, albeit with an empty capsule – making two complete orbits of the earth. According to NASA, the flight test was “nearly flawless”. Now, engineers and data scientists are analyzing the flight data to find critical and important information and ways to improve any design flaws.
The first flight of the Orion MPCV is slated for 2017, although unmanned, on the EM – 1 mission. The EM – 1 mission is a test-run for the properly manned mission beyond the Earth’s orbit since Apollo 17. Although the EM -2 had been scheduled for 2021, recent reductions in budgetary commitments towards the project have resulted in a change in the timeline to 2023. It should also be pointed out that EM -2 won’t be to Mars or any new Moon for that matter. Rather, the mission will be to a stable orbit around the moon in 2023.
A critical part of the Orion project is the currently developed NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS). The SLS is described by NASA as the most powerful rocket ever built (One question though – Can it launch me to my success?). It is with this power and thrust, that man will further probe the deepest distance beyond the earth's orbit. Could we truly find other life forms on Mars?

Can you answer the Orion MPCV questions?
