No pun intended, but “small man with big ambitions” would perfectly describe the 1.70m tall Napoleon. France does seem to have its share of short leaders, remember Sarkozy?

But I digress. Is it only me or whenever we are studying European history, we always come back to Africa, the cradle of humankind? The battle of the Nile is one of the Napoleonic wars fought between the French navy and the British navy on the Mediterranean Sea. The French fleet was under General Napoleon Bonaparte and the British navy was under Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson.

The British forces won the battle. This battle was fought on 1st of August of 1798. The British fleet was composed of ships like the Vanguard, the Majestic, and the Defense each of which had 74 guns. The French fleet had ships like the L’orient, with 120 guns and the Guerrier, the Conquerant and the Spartiate each with 74 guns.

No one will ever know, but when it was clear that Napoleon was after Egypt and Malta, the British must have been scared out of their wits but of course, they will never admit that. However, that must have been their wake up call to do something about Napoleon or all they would have to show for their naval might would be a place in history.

In January of 1798, the French fleet under the command of Napoleon gathered on the Mediterranean intending to attack. Although this intention was apparent to the British, they were not sure of which part of the Mediterranean the French intended to invade from. As a counter, the British navy was deployed into the Mediterranean too. In February of the same year, Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson was made the commander of the British fleet against Napoleon’s fleet. It was discovered that Napoleon intended to invade Malta and then Egypt. This angered and scared the British government at the same time.

After taking Malta, Napoleon set his eyes on Egypt. There, on 1st August 1798, Nelson found the French fleet on the port of Alexandria and immediately prepared for battle.

The French dug their own pit. In true French romantic fashion maybe, they crammed their ships into port, making fighting difficult. They also had little supplies. Being the bright lad that he was, Admiral Nelson leaped on the advantage and defeated the French.

Can you Trace the battles on the map?
