Hello, Jones-san, Karen-san … Whatever your name is, add the san suffix. It will make it sound more Japanese! Great place to visit, is Osaka. Forget Harakiri, it does not happen, not in the 21st century. You would do well to think more positive like geishas, Jacuzzis, sushi and the most charming old towns, such as you will never see anywhere else. With more than 19 million inhabitants, this is the third largest city by population, in Japan.
Despite being Japan’s 2nd smallest prefecture, Osaka has the 2nd largest population in the country and this could most likely be attributed to its strategic central position within the Kansai Region of Honshu-Japan’s main island. The Kansai Region is composed of the prefectures of Mie, Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Shiga and it is considered the heart of Japan both culturally and historically.
Because of its unparalleled position and lack of calamity-induced damage, the region boasts of having more UNESCO World Heritage Listings than its eastern Kanto counterpart. When talking of the head prefectures in possession of National treasures, Kansai houses 6 out of the 7. It has 4 National Parks within its borders both partially and wholly. Needless to say, the region is a major tourist destination.
Whereas the eastern Kanto Region is emblematic of standardization, Kansai Region shows more mannerisms including Kyoto’s vast culture, Nara’s rich history, Kobe’s cosmopolitanism and Osaka’s intriguing mercantilism; thus displaying Japan’s counterculture. Also widely popular for its food, dishes in Kansai are sweeter as opposed to those of the Kanto region. Osaka, especially, is known for its intricate yet sumptuous cuisine, so much that there is a famous saying among the locals: ‘Kyotoites are ruined by overspending on clothing; Osakans are ruined by overspending on food’.
Kansai Region has yet more feathers in its cap as it has enviable baseball prosperity, the region even boasts of its very own dialect, and the speakers are known as Kansai-ben. There, if you want to take that vacation in Japan, you know where you want to begin.
