PROFESsee is my title. I am the perpetual learner, in pursuit of knowledge, wisdom and truth. I derived my name from professor
Like me, you find discussing chewed mashed food, how it gets into and out of your stomach disgusting. But wait … until you get hernia and the doctor has to tie two loose ends of the colon. That is when you will learn some respect for your colon, ok, no, your digestive system.
The human digestive system is the reason behind growth and good health in general. This is because it is the system that takes in food and assimilates it into useful nutrients that aid in growth and immunity. You can simply think of it as a car’s engine, you put in fuel, it combusts it to give out energy to run the car and gives out some waste in form of fumes.
When you sit at the dining table enjoying your veggies, pizza, chicken, juice and whatever else you would like included in your menu, it is important to know that the food takes a long journey through the system to the point of exit. At this time, all the essential nutrients and fluids will have been absorbed and stored or used immediately. Funny enough, digestion will start even before you sink your teeth into that chocolate-looking cake. When you see food or smell a sumptuous meal, then you will start salivating and this is the start of digestion. Contrary to what most people think, digestion does not start in the stomach, it starts in the mouth when you start chewing your food into smaller bits.
This means that the components of the digestive system include the mouth, stomach, the small intestines, the large intestines, and the rectum where the end process takes place and the waste is stored before exiting through the anus. Throughout the digestive system, there are major and minor organs that are strategically situated in order to assist the digestion process. These include the liver and glands that secrete chemical and enzymes to fasten the process. The next time you take a meal, just know that there is a factory-like process taking place to ensure that the food is broken down and that when the next meal is due, you have enough space for another plate.
